This object puts me under a certain amount of consciousness and pressure as the culture of the region requires for females to cover up. The decisions of wearing garments are unknowingly based upon the standards set by the society and social construct. The absence of this garment can generate body image issues. It almost acts as a protective barrier and a mask to fit in. The amount of time it remains in contact with the body makes it seem like an extension of the body. The stress of concealing and the shame of visibility remain constant on a subconscious level.

The silk dressing gown of my Great Aunt, “Polkadot” or “Dotty”. My niece was named after her. I experience pressure to repair it, I want to wear it, but am worried about it tearing as it has several seams that are unraveling. I worry that my niece will not appreciate it enough because it is in poor condition, yet to me a thing worn on the naked body of an ancestor is powerful.

I get stabbed a million times trimming these yuccas. If I don’t trim them they get nasty and that stresses me out even more.

This piece I created always reminds me how late I was with setting up that exhibition.

Mirror.
Looking into the mirror helps me to grasp my look, but foremost I´m reminded of the observation made by others. I´m reminded of me as someone outside myself. Me in other peoples eyes, the mirror fitting into the eye view as judgemental, more than other senses.

I am under a personal challenge of trying to reduce as much as plastic waste in my daily life. Although there is one thing that I can not refuse to buy, which is bubble tea. What makes it worse is that bubble tea almost can not be drank out of with out using a specific plastic straw.

It is not the object itself that is creating stress, but the form of the packaging. Pills, that are sold in a metal and plastic packaging so that each day one single on should be used, creates the feeling of stress and pressure: following the time passing by, seeing the emptying of the pack and still fearing to forget one. The object becomes the governor of the everyday life, that has to be in rhythm with taking one pill each day.

For years I owned over 30 of these large gray containers filled with stuff, most of which I do not use but cannot seem to part with. Working on the Carriers and Barriers project has made it clear to me is that I imbue a lot of objects with great meaning. They cary spiritual significance, shape rituals, hold memories, and inspire creative possibilities … my challenge is knowing when and how to part with objects no longer needed or useful. I guess I must confess to having some hoarder tendencies. It has created quite a bit of clutter, taking up mental/emotional energy and precious space in my home and studio. I have always felt a sense of shame when showing people around my home due to this clutter. Last year, while working on this photography project I had to move out of the space I was storing the containers in. I am proud to say I got rid of 75 percent of the stuff. What is left is mainly useful and important and I feel a lot lighter!
