Many. One funny one I can think of which spread like fire was I used to make racks for my tubes in the lab (we call them eppys) out of two plastic lids that I would tape together. The lids came with some general consumables in the lab which every single person used and were a great nuisance in the lab. Not after I joined. Everyone loved the idea and I could see them doing it. Spread like fire.

White and black ceramic object I made working in Los Angeles – that doesn’t exactly function, yet it could, but was the start of hundreds or thousands of other hand made ceramic objects I’ve worked on for years since.

During my time at graduate school I intentionally but also unintentionally created these mold parts as I was planning to make cups for a community cup sale. It was the moment I separated each pieces and display it on top of my working table to let them dry when I encountered the beauty of the objects living outside the context of “a mold”. Since then, I have been exploring the process of breaking molds of different prototype shapes, allowing me to reach to my current studio practice.

These hexagonal plates were inspired by my Grandma Jewell’s quilts which were sown together with hexagonal pieces of cloth. I transferred some of her recipes in her handwriting onto the plates. I have done 3 more art projects since then using the same shape in the form of tiles, plant pots and dishes. I enjoy the tessellating forms and the way the hexagon serves as a building block in nature in everything from beehives to frozen water molecules.
